Remembering the Golden Rule
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." - Luke 6:31
The Golden Rule. We all know it. We also understand what it means. But, are we really applying it?
Maybe sometimes. Or, we probably never think about it anymore. After all, it's just another one of those quotes we try to live by.
That is the problem. This is probably one of the most important principles in life. Yet, we fail to see how essential it is to everything we do.
Whether at work, at home, in dealing with people, doing transactions or simply the way we treat our friends, this 'rule' applies.
Think of it as an investment. In the line of my work, I deal with a lot of people online. I connect with them via email and social media. I make sure I invest in good relationships. I do favors for them and treat them well and with respect. It is not like I am asking for anything in return. It automatically happens. They do the same thing for me.
Same thing happens with the opposite. I once worked with someone who did not really treat me right. She was undermining my capabilities to the point of really insulting me with what I do. It was horrible. I had to fully end every connection I had with her. A few months after, she tried to contact me and ask me a favor. You could probably guess what I did. I obviously declined. It was like an automatic response.
From those experiences, I have learned to remember that whatever I do will reciprocate. If I invest in good things, good friends and good relationships, I will get that. If I do the opposite, I will get it too. The Golden Rule has always been there. I just think we fail to understand it by heart.
