Why Face to Face Meetings are Important for Virtual Teams
I work for a company called Time Doctor. It is entirely run by virtual teams all around the world.
Since our mission is enabling people to work whenever they want and wherever they want, we live and work just like that.
However, we can't really live with just seeing each other only in Skype or email.
This year all of Time Doctor's virtual employees from the Philippines met up at a fancy resort in Cebu City. Our bosses from Canada also came and joined the party.
We had a ton of fun doing team building activities, touring Cebu and eating some great food.
This made me realize a few reasons why face to face meetings are really important for virtual teams.
1. Face to face meetings strengthen your working relationships
Talking to your co-worker on Skype is good. Video chatting with them is great. But, nothing beats seeing them in person and just getting to know them personally. Seeing them for the first was quite awkward. But, it helped me become more comfortable with them. That's a big plus for ensuring a smooth working relationship.
2. It’s a great opportunity to brainstorm and discuss the company’s vision and mission
During the team building event, Liam (the co-founder of Time Doctor) talked about where we are at and how we could move forward as a company. A few brainstorming sessions also happened and these wouldn’t have been possible if we were just chatting on Skype.
3. It re-energizes you
In our 3-day stay at Cebu, we were just chilling, chatting, relaxing and taking break from work. We were all just having fun with each other's company. Being able to disconnect alongside meeting them for the first time was a great re-energizer. It kind of motivates me to work more.
You should consider seeing your virtual team face to face if you haven't yet. Do team building events, meetups or even just coffee breaks.
This may take a bit of your financial resources. But, it’s all worth it seeing how much it makes your virtual team grow stronger and better.
